Week 13: Plant Transformations/ Transformaciones de Plantas

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is right down the street from BxC! It is a wonderful world of plants and flowers that is beautiful in every season. Some of the people who work at the NYBG are scientists who study plants. The garden has a huge collection of plant specimens–a fancy word for an example of a specific kind of plant.

This week, we are going to look at some interesting plant specimens and then transform them into something new using drawing to add lines and shapes! You will do your drawing in Seesaw, but you can see some examples here:

The NYBG Herbarium has many other interesting stories to share about their plant collection. Amy Weiss, who works at the Herbarium, enjoys making collections of specimens to share with the public. These are some art related collections that I think you’ll enjoy!

This summer, you can try drawing some of these specimens or you can search for specimens out in the world that would fit into these collections. The plant world has always inspired artists–see what inspiration you find!

Week 12: The Human Figure/Semana 12: El Cuerpo Humano

Since people began making marks and drawing, people have drawn the human body! The human figure has fascinated artists for thousands of years.

This week, we are going to explore how the human body works. You will create a simple foil sculpture of the human figure to pose in different ways. Watch this video for a simple tutorial about how to create a tinfoil figure.

Once your figure is created, think about how your own body works. What parts of your body bend? What direction do your joints bend?

Make a pose with your own body and then see if you can recreate it with your figure sculpture. Think about different ways that your foil figure can interact with your home or things outside. Work to shape and bend your figure into interesting poses that connect to objects. When you are happy with the pose, take a picture and share it on Seesaw. You can share as many pictures as you want, just add a new page for each one.

A landscape is an image of land and sky along with other things you might see outside like hills, trees, water, and houses.

This week we are going to use laundry–clothes, towels, sheets, scarves, coats–to create a landscape! Watch the video to see how I created a landscape with laundry.

Create Your Laundry Landscape

This is a great challenge to do with your siblings!

1.Choose a photo of a landscape or use your imagination! Decide what colors you will need for your landscape.

2.Collect laundry in the colors that you need. Patterned fabric sometimes works really well!

3.Lay out your sky first and then layer the other parts of your landscape on top of the sky. Think about the shapes in your landscape and how they connect or meet. Don’t leave any empty spaces!

4. Press the +ADD RESPONSE button and choose PHOTO to take a picture of your landscape from above.

Week 10: Playing with Abstract Art/Semana 10: Jugando con Arte Abstracto

Abstract art doesn’t show people, places and things realistically, like they are in a picture. Abstract art uses lines, shapes and color to communicate an idea or feeling.

Wassily Kandinsky is considered a pioneer of abstract art. He used shapes, line, and color to create vibrant images. Kandinsky loved music, he would close his eyes and imagine the music as lines and shapes. He created paintings with movement and sound!

El arte abstracto no muestra personas, lugares y cosas de manera realista, como si estuvieran en una imagen. El arte abstracto utiliza líneas, formas y colores para comunicar una idea o sentimiento.

Week 9: Pixel Art/Semana 9: Arte Pixelar

A Pixel is the smallest unit of color on a computer screen or digital image. Many pixels together create an image. When there are fewer pixels, the image may look blockly, showing the squares of individual color. The first video games were made for 8 bit and 16 bit consoles and computers which had very blocky pixelated images–like the original Super Mario Brothers.

This week, we are going to be creating art using pixels. Which means our art will be made with squares and rectangles–only vertical and horizontal lines!

You can figure out how to design your image using LEGOs and the pixilart website, trying different combinations of blocks until you get the shape you want. It takes some practice to figure out how to pixelate an image. If you want some help, you can find many examples of pixel art online along with instructions for creating different designs.

Week 8: 3D Letters!/Semana 8: ¡Cartas 3D!

Typography is a fancy art word that means letter and type design. Every font (style of letter) in the world was created by an artist! Ever since people have been writing, artists have been creating different ways to write letters.

This week you are going to design your own typography! You are going to use objects around your house to communicate an idea using one word. HOW you create that word will help make your idea clear to me.

Now it’s your turn! What message do you want to communicate? What idea do you have for a word that you could create with objects from home?

The world BUILD made with Legos? The word CLOTHES made with clothes? The word MAKE-UP made with make-up? The possibilities are endless!

1.Think of a word you want to create and figure out what objects you will use to create the word and communicate your idea.

2.Collect your objects and find a plain surface where you can build your word. Make sure it is spelled correctly!

3.Take a picture from above the word, looking straight down. Try not to get any shadows in your picture!

These are some other examples of 3D Typography for inspiration. I can’t wait to see what you make!

Week 7: Make a Mandala/Semana 7: Hacer un Mandala

Mandala means “circle” in Sanskrit. Mandalas are symbols of the universe in the Buddhist religion. Drawing mandalas or creating them with objects has become popular around the world as a way for people to center themselves and find calm and peace. Mandalas use radial symmetry to create a design that grows from the center and creates matching wedges like pie slices around the center. . Watch this video to learn about mandalas and radial symmetry, then find out how you can make one of your own using objects around your house.

Mandala significa “círculo” en sánscrito. Los mandalas son símbolos del universo en la religión budista. Dibujar mandalas o crearlos con objetos se ha vuelto popular en todo el mundo como una forma de que las personas se centren y encuentren la calma y la paz. Make your mandala

1.Collect a variety of different objects. For every object you choose, you need to have more than one of that object. You’ll probably need 4 or 8!

You want to select things that create lines and shapes when you see them from above.

Things that make lines: chopsticks, straws, butter knives, toothpicks, Q-tips, hair pins, pencils, pens, etc.

Things that are round: toilet paper rolls, bottle caps, buttons, beads, cotton balls, etc.

Things that are rectangles: playing cards, napkins, books, post-it notes, phones, etc.

What other shapes can you find around your house? Remember you will need 4 or 8 of whatever you use!!

2.Start with something round in the center. Then add items so that they radiate out from the middle. 

Whatever you put down coming out from the center on one side, you have to do the same thing on the oposite side–in all directions from the center. In the end, you should have matching “wedges” like pizza slices. 

Look at these mandalas by artist Paula Brett. She uses a variety of objects to create mandalas that use radial symmetry to grow from the middle out to the edge of the design.

Week 6: Mask Making/Semana 6: Fabricación de máscaras

We have all been hearing and talking about the important masks that keep people safe from the coronavirus. This week we are making artistic masks for fun, not protection! These masks can be made with materials that we have at home. Masks can transform your face and turn you into someone new! I made 3 different kinds of masks with my family. You can make one of these or you can make any other kind of mask!

Ahora todo el mundo esta hablando de máscaras importantes que mantienen la salud de la gente. Esta semana estamos haciendo máscaras artísticas para diversión, no para protección. Make a half mask

Supplies: cereal box (or other cardboard), markers, crayons or just a pencil!

Cut a mask shape that will fit over your nose and cover your cheeks, eyes and forehead. You can create an animal, person or monster!

Remember, your mask is only meant to show the top part of whatever face you are creating. Leave a cut-out for your nose so that it blends in with the bottom part of your face.

Make a paper bag mask

Supplies: paper bag, markers, pencil

Paper bag masks are fun because the change the shape of your entire head quickly and easily!

If your bag has writing on it, you might want to turn it inside out. Cut along one edge and then crumple and carefully turn your bag inside out until you have a smooth brown surface for your design.

Use a pencil to lay out your mask face. MAKE IT BIG AND BOLD! This is a time for simple and big drawing!

Use a marker to make your face stand out. Put your paper bag on different people in your house! Make more paper bag masks and pose for a picture as a family!

Found Object Mask

Supplies: recyclables, plastic, cardboard, anything you want!

Look for containers or boxes that have shapes that could work for a mask. Crumple, fold or cut objects so that they fit together in interesting ways around your face. Use tape or glue to hold your mask together.

Week 5: Self-Portrait Transformations/ Semana 5: Transformaciones de auto-retratos

We are continuing our portrait investigation this week with a photo transformation challenge. When you draw or take a photograph of yourself it is a SELF PORTRAIT. A portrait of yourself. The word “selfie” comes from self-portrait, it is a picture you take of yourself.

This week we are going to take a selfie, or have someone else in your family take your picture, and then you will transform your portrait. There are 2 different ways to transform your self portrait, with Seesaw OR with another photo editing app on your phone or a phone you borrow from a grown-up.

Seesaw Self-Portrait Transformation Challenge/Desafio de Transformacion del Auto-Retrato en Seesaw

This challenge was inspired by Max-Andre in first grade. For his museum challenge last week, he recreated this portrait of the aritist Jean-Michel Basquiat. He styled his brother’s hair and then drew on top of the picture to create the graffiti-like background designs.

It is an awesome recreation and made me think that it would be fantastic to transform our own self-portraits using the drawing tools in Seesaw!

Artists have been transforming photographs with computers for a long time–digital art is when you use tools on a computer to make your image.

When artists were first using computers to change photographs, the singer and artist, Grace Jones had a series of covers made for her records using digital technology. It was a really new idea and people loved it!

You can transform yourself anyway you like, using the drawing tools in Seesaw!

1.In Seesaw, press the +ADD button in this activity and take a photo of yourself. Then use the drawing tools–the pencil, marker and crayon–to draw on your self-portrait.

You can make a costume for yourself, add silly hair or funny designs on your face–WHATEVER YOU WANT! Just transform your self-portrait into something that you like!

Chances are, if someone in your home has a smartphone, they have a way to edit photographs on that smartphone. Since phone cameras have become a standard part of cell phones, editing apps have become popular ways to transform photos on a phone.

Sometimes the photo app that stores all of the photos in the phone has filters and effects that you can use to edit your pictures. There are also really good editing apps available for free. Pixlr and PicsArt are two easy to use photo editing apps. Don’t download anything without your parent or guardian’s permission!

1.Take a selfie or have a family member take your photo. Then open the photo in any photo editing app.

2.When you open your photo in the editing app, there are lots of effects and tools you can use to transform your picture. Play around with different effects. Select one and then add another!

3.When you are happy with your edited self-portrait, upload it to Seesaw OR email it me at kendra@bronxcommunity.org.

This week is a family challenge for the whole school!

There are two family challenges–one low tech and one high tech–that invite you and your family to transform yourselves. I can’t wait to see what you create!

Museum Challenge/Desafío del museo

Recreate a portrait painting by a contemporary or historical artist. This challenge has been entertaining people at home for weeks now. You can look up images using the hashtags #museumchallenge or #gettychallenge to see other recreations on Instagram.

BxC teachers have taken on this challenge and have made some excellent recreations on their own and with family!

1.Choose an artwork. You can pick a famous painting or you and your family can learn about some artists together. At BxC, I always make sure that we are learning about artists from the African Diaspora, Latin America and the Carribean. I also introduce students to contemporary artists of color, so they learn about artists like them who are creating right now!

This is a list of contemporary and historical artists of color who you may not of heard about before. Their work really deserves more recognition. Check them out for inspiration!

2.Choose a few parts of a painting that you think you can copy:

pose/gesture

clothing/props (get creative!)

setting/background

mood/color

other people–extra mythical points for using more than one family member or pets!

Do whatever you can to copy the painting!

3.Make sure you take your picture in good light and pay attention to detail! 

4.Upload your picture and the name of the painting you are copying to Seesaw or email it to me at kendra@bronxcommunity.org. I will post the pictures to Facebook and Instagram (@bxcart) as they come in so you can see what everyone is doing!

Don’t Rush Tik Tok Challenge

Is fashion your thing? Do you love to get dressed up? Do you have clothes that you only wear on special occasions that are eager to get out of the closet?

Then the Don’t Rush TikTok challenge is for you and your family! Clothes and make-up are powerful tools for self-expression. That is art!

Didn’t get to wear your Easter outfits? No chance to dress up and go out for Eid this Ramadan? No one to share your Passover duds with? Share your family looks with the whole school!

Whether you wear the traditional clothes of your culture or the latest trends to get fancy–we want to see how your family transforms itself for special occasions!

1.Figure out who will be in your Don’t Rush challenge. Will you keep it in the family or will you invite other BxC families and friends to join you–you don’t have to be in the same place to show off your fanciest look!

2.Get your fashion on! What will you do with your hair? What will you wear? Go all out!

3.Share your finished video on the BxC Facebook page or email a link to kendra@bronxcommunity.org. I will share them so everyone can see you all looking your very best!
